Turkey

It's almost Thanksgiving and most Americans gorge on this food-based holiday.  A little info about the gobble gobble so no guilt is to be had.

Turkey
- A low-fat protein source
- Tryptophan = production of serotonin in the brain = more sleep
- Turkey's high protein helps control appetite by balancing blood-sugar levels
- White meat has lower fat content, but the difference between white & dark meat is minimal.  Dark/brown meat can help raise metabolism and burn fuel.
- High iron produces fuel for cells and helps muscles store oxygen
- Contains zinc needed to make serotonin, vital in the process of repair to the body.
- Considered a free-range bird, a lower fat alternative to chicken
- Best taste when roasted :)

Happy Thanksgiving!

Best with sides & stuffing :D

Forks Over Knives

The pandemic of Americans today is not sickness related; it is disease caused by over-consumption and the consumption of too much red meat and processed foods.

If you haven't seen the documentary film Forks over Knives, I highly suggest you watch this wake-up call.  Warning: this movie may change your life forever... or you can feint ignorance and decrease your lifespan and your quality of life by compromising your health.

"Let food be thy medicine."  - Hippocrates

This is the true wake up call.  Change today: start by eating a whole foods, plant-based diet and you will see the difference in the numbers, your lifestyle, and your mental health.

Low-down on Avocados

Lately, I have found that I like to order things off a menu that include avocados.  Rarely do I prepare them at home, but it's always a nice addition to any meal.

Avocados are considered a superfood- their creamy flesh is packed with nutrients for young skin and a strong heart.  Nutrients such as monounsaturated fats & fat-soluble nutrients, like vitamins A & E, are essential to skin, eyes, heart, brain and liver.

Although they have a high fat content, the fats come in different forms, some of which are needed for good health.  Need protein?  Avocados have it.  It also includes vitamin C, B vitamins and copper to produce collagen (for skin, bone, muscle rejuvenation, reducing wrinkles and anything that requires production of body tissues/collagen).

If you're looking to use avocados in your diet, blend them up in the next smoothie.  It makes drinks creamier and slow down release of sugars from other fruits (due to the fat content).  They're also great in salads or by themselves with a bit of evoo and seasoning.  :D

Fake Blueberries

I don't know if anyone is as concerned with what they're eating as much as I am, but I was sent this video about "fake" blueberries.  I love my blueberries and antioxidants, and will choose blueberry flavor over many others offered.  But inside, is it really fruit?

Which is more motivating?  The health of American consumers or the promotion of healthy food to increase their profit margins?  We know more and more processed foods have dangerous ingredients, such as trans fat, high fructose corn syrup or partially-hydrogenated-anything.  Why can't we look out for each other and be honest about what we have in our products?

See the whole story about blueberries HERE.
